W1S1: Class - Looking at the Newspaper

What catches my eye?

  • Images
  • Colour
  • Interactive things (crosswords etc)
  • Pull quotes

What makes me want to read an article?

  • An interesting/clever heading
  • When it's about a topic that interests me
  • Accompanying photographs

What keeps my interest?

  • White space/breathing room
  • Not too much text so I don't feel overwhelmed or like it will take too long
  • Multiple images

What turns me off a page/article?

  • Advertisements
  • Too much text that isn't broken up
  • I don't like it when the front page is too busy

Other observations/ things to consider:

  • Hierarchy
  • Similar articles are placed together
  • Classifieds
  • Split into sections
  • Same colour used as accent throughout
  • Paper is aimed at older audience, they're sticking to what they know, what people expect, the 'rules' of newspapers, not gaining a new audience, not appealing to youths
  • Ergonomics - How users would read/hold the paper, e.g. secondary articles on the side, everything is positioned in relation to the fold line
